Arsène Souffriau

... even for someone well-versed in 60’s electronic music, souffriau’s name only rings a bell due to his contributions to the moogsploitation lp “free pop electronic concept” ... whereas his work there is relegated to only ancillary bleep-out, the fully realized musique concrète & dark tape-music compositions here paint a much broader picture of souffriau, a veritable renaissance man, working well into present day at his “private” bimes studio, chugging out pieces along the lines of contemporaries such as andre almuro and luis de pablo, yet entirely without academic or commercial support ...

... making him of course the perfect candidate for a boutique compiling such as this, ranging from some particularly woolly early-60’s flare-out (much of which matches the mutant energies of oosterlynck’s “outsider” prepared-piano takes) through his dalliances with electro-acoustic improv in the 70’s & 80’s (spiky, clangorous group-sound) straight up through a peppering of 90’s “digital” work (heavy, spectral hysteresis) ...

01 - trois études pour maldoror [1] by 666 vs 777

... trust me, once you see this thing, you’ll be able to justify the (admittedly, hefty) price tag ; i can’t think of another edition that even comes close to the respect & production-value / detail-obsessing-over that clearly went into this thing ... highly recommended !!! [mimaroglu]

Laurie Spiegel

Laurie Spiegel (born September 20, 1945 in Chicago) is an American composer. She has worked at Bell Laboratories, in computer graphics, and is known primarily for her electronic-music compositions and her algorithmic composition software Music Mouse. She also plays the guitar and lute.[1]

Spiegel, who attended Shimer College, Brooklyn College, and Oxford University, received a degree in social sciences and went on to study composition with Jacob Druckman and Vincent Persichetti at the Juilliard School. Her early musical experiences were largely self-directed, beginning with the mandolin, guitar, and banjo she had as a child, which she learned to play by ear; she taught herself Western music notation at the age of 20, after which she began writing down her compositions.

Spiegel was seen by some as a pioneer of the New York new-music scene. She withdrew from this scene in the early 1980s, believing that its focus had shifted from artistic process to product. While she continues to support herself though software development, Spiegel aims to use technology in music as a means of furthering her art rather than as an end in itself. [ Wikipedia]

Asa Chang & Junray

Asa Chang & Junray is the band of the Japanese percussionist Asa Chang, who was the founder and original bandmaster of Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. After leaving that group in 1993, he formed Asa Chang & Junray in 1998 with programmer and guitarist Hidehiko Urayama. They were joined in 2000 by tabla player U-zhaan. Live, the group use a portable soundsystem called 'Jun-Ray Tronics', hence the name — although the word 'junray' also means 'pilgrimage'.

In 2002, the British label The Leaf Label released Jun Ray Song Chang, which compiled the group's first two, Japan-only albums. It was followed a year later by the mini album, Tsu Gi Ne Pu. The group's song 'Hana' was featured on Fabric Live 07, while 'Tsu Gi Ne Pu' was included on a The Wire Tapper CD. The group's most recent album, 2005's Minna no Junray, featured vocals by singer and actress Kyōko Koizumi. It has not been released overseas. [wikipedia]
